Wat Khao Kaew was originally a temple for the public, constructed during the reign of King Phra Chao Songtham of the Ayutthaya Kingdom in 1628 AD. The temple was officially registered as a monastery with its ordination hall inscribed on April 3, 1769 AD, and it is recognized as a second-class royal temple under the Mahayana Buddhist hierarchy. It is located in the Ton Tan subdistrict, Sao Hai district, Saraburi province, nestled within a small, circular limestone hill that stands about 15 meters above the ground, surrounded by the rice fields of the local community.
